A DIALOGUGUE BETWEEN COONTINENTS STEPHEN BURKS

Design is originally a European invention, says Stephen Burks. But leaving it at that excludes the majority of the world’s population. After successfully launching his career with international brands, the US American product designer began drawing inspiration from African culture. Burks then sought direct contact with producers in Africa to establish working relationships that are fruitful for both sides. After all, industrial mass production stands to benefit from reembracing the quality of craftsmanship, which has almost become extinct in wealthy countries. With his studio “Man Made”, Burks now develops fair, beautiful and durable products that not only look handmade, but actually are.
