PAPER BECOMES HOUSE THOMAS DEMAND

A folded hat, a piece of perforated paper and a disposable party plate form the inspiration for an ensemble
that can now be viewed on the premises of Danish fabric specialist Kvadrat. The pavilion’s clear references for paper products are the result of a collaboration with Berlin artist Thomas Demand. Over the past 20 years, this photographer and sculptor has made a name for himself with his three-dimensional paper worlds based on real images; these are elaborately illuminated and presented as large-format photographs. The motifs of these cardboard replicas range from famous press photos to natural wonders such as a grotto; the replicas are destroyed after the photographs have been taken. The Architecture parlante in Ebeltoft near Aarhus, which houses a guest apartment, a sunny conference room and a gallery for a fabric artwork by Rosemarie Trockel, will be spared this fate. The architecture of these follies was designed by the famous British office Caruso St. John.
